Fall weather is fast approaching and as the seasons are changing, so will our herd. It’s with mixed emotions and immense gratitude for their service that we send four of our herd members home near the end of this year.
Sunflower will be going home at the end of September to enjoy life with her owner and friends. We will then be beginning the steps of retiring our very beloved, Dusty. Dusty is showing signs of having a hard time maintaining the stamina it takes for a horse to work 6 days a week. While he is still a blast to ride and is in great health, we never want to push our horses past their tolerance and abilities. Around the same time as Dusty would be moving to his new home sometime in November and December, Hidalgo and Duke will be looking forward to their road trip home to Texas to live with their human mom and dad. Duke suffers from arthritis all throughout his body and Colorado winters are very hard on him. Hidalgo is from the same family as Duke and will be returning home to be Duke’s companion and enjoy exploring Texas trails with his human mom.
All those changes leave us with very big shoes to fill. From now until the spots are filled, we will be looking for exceptional therapy horses to help assist present and future clients. Contrary to popular belief, therapy horses work hard! All incoming trial horses must first meet three very important requirements:
- That they are between the ages of 7 – 17 so they can stay in the program long term
- They are sound in the walk, trot, and canter to allow any capable rider to progress as far as they can in their horsemanship dreams
- That they are beginner safe
